  • Spring Concert Series Enjoy the fabulous music of local musicians as the City of Newark Parks and Recreation Department once again hosts the Spring Concert Series. Concerts will be held Thursday nights 7 to 8 p.m. (weather permitting) starting May 2 and running through June 6. Grab a bite to eat and do some shopping on Main Street. Then join us for an evening of fun on the Academy Building lawn. Look for the concert schedule in the spring.   • Avian Adventures May 11,2024 9:30 a.m. “Call”-ing all birders! Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by going on a bird hike with a ranger to observe the birds that live in the park. Bring your own binoculars if you have them; the park has a limited number of binoculars. Meet at the Beaver Marsh Loop Trailhead in the Rogues Harbor upper parking lot. Day use fees apply ($3 per Maryland residents; $5 per out-of-state residents).

  • Sunday, May 19, 2024 UD Green and Main Street 1 p.m. – Ceremony on the Green 2 p.m. – Parade on Main Street The Newark Memorial Day Parade is an annual event that is held the third Sunday in May. During this annual event, veterans of wars from all branches of service have continued to march in the parade. To start the day, a ceremony honoring our nation’s veterans is held on the University of Delaware’s Campus Green at Memorial Hall followed by the parade on Main Street.

  • National Trails Day Hike June 1, 2024 10 a.m. Get a jumpstart into celebrating ‘Great Outdoors Month’ by joining a ranger on National Trails Day to explore the forested areas of the park. This two-mile hike will let you view the native flora of the White Banks and Beaver Marsh Loop Trails. Dogs on a leash are welcome. Day use fees apply ($3 per Maryland resident; $5 per out-of-state resident). Reservations preferred but not required. Meet at the Rogues Harbor Upper Parking Lot.

  • Cecil County Wade In June 15, 2024 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Join park staff at North East Beach for the 15th Annual Cecil County Wade In. Partnered with other agencies in the community, we will pull up our pant legs and wade into the Chesapeake Bay to measure the water quality the way former Maryland State Senator Bernie Fowler did with his “sneaker index”. Reservations are not required; day use fee waived for participants. Bring clothes that can get wet, water shoes, water, and sunscreen.

  • Elk River Exploration June 29,2024 9-11 a.m. Explore the banks of the Turkey Point Peninsula by paddling the Elk River. Along the way, learn to identify some of the animals that call this watery habitat home. You could even catch a glimpse of a Bald Eagle swooping down to catch a fish!   • International Observe the Moon Night September 14, 2024 7:30 p.m. Join a ranger and millions of others across the globe for NASA’s International Observe the Moon Night. Learn about the phases of the moon and other stellar phenomena in the Milky Way Galaxy. Weather permitting, you will have the opportunity to observe the moon and stargaze at the night sky. Bring your own binoculars if you have them; the park has a limited number of binoculars. Meet at the Nature Center, located in the campground. Registration is preferred, but not required.   • Community Day Sunday, September 15, 2024 (Rain date Sunday, September 22) 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. University of Delaware Green The City of Newark’s Parks and Recreation Department, in cooperation with the University of Delaware, and the Christina School District present the area’s premier fall festival on Sunday, September 17. This exciting event features fun for the entire family. The Green provides the perfect outdoor venue for local musicians and demonstration groups. A food court will have a variety of foods. Fine Art and Homemade Craft vendors will be displaying and selling their creations. the Children’s Area is always a big hit with scarecrow making and more. Community information booths and activities are supplied by a variety of local businesses and organizations. Please remember that pets are not comfortable in the heat and crowds of large events, so for their safety and the safety of those attending the event, please leave your pets at home.   • Fall Community Clean Up Grab your family, friends, coworkers, neighbors and help keep Newark beautiful. Supply pick up will be held outside at the City of Newark Municipal Building on Saturday, October 12 from 9 – 11 a.m. Individuals and volunteer groups (of 15 or less) will be given a location assignment after registering and can report directly to the clean-up location. One member of the group or individual volunteers will be responsible for picking up supplies from the Municipal Building. Pre-registration is required for this event and can be completed online at www.newarkde.gov/play. Gloves and trash bags will be provided.   • Sunday, October 27, 2023 3pm – 4pm Main Street, Newark Newark’s Halloween Parade is drawing near. Plan now to be a part of this event, complete with marching bands, floats, antique automobiles, costumed characters and much more! The parade begins at Tyre Ave and Main St and marches west on Main St to College Ave. Local clubs, civic groups, school bands, PTA’s and scout troops are encouraged to participate. Parade categories (pre-registration required) are: 1. Marching Bands or Musical Groups 2. Floats 3. Large Marching Groups 4. Small/Family Marching Group 5. Vehicles Pre-registration is NOT necessary if you wish to come in costume and walk in the parade. A special line up space will be provided. Check in at the information booth at Delaware Avenue entrance to George Read Park by 2:30 p.m. on parade day. Politicians/Political Groups – If you wish to march in the parade, you MUST be in costume AND pre-register. We appreciate your cooperation.   • Nature Trek November 29,2024 10 a.m. Stretch your legs and work off those extra Thanksgiving calories. Join a ranger for a refreshing two-mile hike along the White Banks Trail. Holiday entertainment, roasting chestnuts, caroling, tree lighting, ice carving demonstrations and much more will fill this wonderful evening of fun for the whole family. Winterfest is joint effort by the Newark Parks and Recreation Department and the University of Delaware. The Delaware Special Olympics will he holding their annual Reindeer Run in conjunction with Winterfest (www.sode.org). • Attention: Foster Care needed for The Humane Society of Harford County
  Love Kittens but you’re not ready for a long-term commitment? Please consider Fostering!! Please visit the www.wxcyfm.com pet page for contact information and to learn more about fostering opportunities. Last year, HSHC received over 400 kittens that required foster care. This litter season will be just as busy. HSHC has already received dozens of kittens this spring and expects to receive hundreds more as the summer goes on. “It happens every spring and summer, and the sheer number of incoming animals can be overwhelming,” says Mary Leavens, Executive Director. “We need foster parents to provide love and care until the kittens are old enough to be adopted.” Foster parents provide temporary homes so kittens can grow in loving, nurturing environments until they are 8 weeks of age and will return to the shelter and be adopted into forever homes. • Harford County: Substance Abuse Support Group Meetings every Tuesday
  As an extension of its existing Addictions Services, the Harford County Health Department is providing a free support group for families of individuals with substance abuse problems, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm on Tuesday evenings on the third floor of their offices at 120 S. Hays Street, Bel Air, MD. The group is open to anyone 18 years of age or older affected by someone else’s substance abuse, including immediate and extended family members and friends. The individual need not be in treatment at the Health Department for family members to attend. No registration is necessary and people can join at any time.   : Crisis Intervention: the prevention of unnecessary or inappropriate hospitalizations of a person experiencing severe symptoms of a mental illness or substance related problem. By providing services in the community, CI staff can better assess the consumer’s environment, support systems and current level of functioning. They can gain a clear understanding of type of treatment and support services that will be needed. • Pitties and Purrs Rescue Inc.
  The Rescue with a Heart …Pitties and Purrs Rescue Inc. is a 501©(3) Foster-based Rescue grounded out of Baltimore, MD. Our President, Mary Sullivan, is an amazing woman that spends her life caring for the well-being of animals in need. She is never afraid to aid in rescue as she is always extending a loving hand to any animal that may need help. Mary instills this in her Rescue group every day. We rescue hundreds of Pit Bulls country-wide to be rehabilitated and to ultimately find their forever homes. We work tirelessly to change the public’s misperception of Pit Bull-type-dogs, and to always convey what a wonderful and loving breed they are. This Rescue’s mission is also about Educating and Advocating for Animals in need. Due to the fact that we are a Foster-based Rescue, we function completely off of donations, as well as our wonderful volunteers that care for & temporarily welcome the dogs and cats into their homes, and prepare them for adoption. There can be a spay/neuter needed (almost always), and many other medical conditions such as mange, entropion eyelids, Heartworm Treatment, biopsies needed, etc. We mostly handle all the tough medical cases that others are not willing to. Not to mention the monthly & yearly vaccinations and grooming for all animals in our care. Training is also a necessity to set up the future Adoptable for success in life. We treat these animals like family, until we can find the perfect home for them to call their own, forever. • Survivors of Abuse in Recovery, Inc. (SOAR)
  SOAR, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing mental health services for those who are affected by sexual abuse, regardless of their ability to pay for services. Incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) organization in 1992, Survivors of Abuse in Recovery, Inc. (SOAR) is a statewide recovery program which provides counseling, referral, and education services to adult, adolescent and child survivors of sexual abuse and assault, their non-offending partners, and non-offending family members. SOAR also provides outreach programs to community organizations and businesses. ~ In addition to the ongoing evaluation of each client by a trained clinician, the effectiveness of SOAR’s treatment program for children and adolescents is measured with the trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC), which is administered to teens before and after each cycle of the group treatment program they participate in. Children complete the TSCC at the beginning of treatment, after six sessions, and at the end of treatment or after one year, whichever comes sooner. The effectiveness of SOAR’s treatment program for adults is monitored with the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), a standard questionnaire that measures a client’s self-reported symptoms in nine specific psychological problem areas.
