The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress suggests chiropractic care as an alternative approach to ADHD. Case studies have reported that the care of a chiropractic doctor resulted in a reduction in the severity of ADHD symptoms. FEBRUARY, 2012 OBSERVED AS CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH
National Children's Dental Health Month is observed every February, emphasizing the need for parents to take action early to ensure the health of their children's teeth. Each February since 1949, the American Dental Association (ADA) has sponsored National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Since opening its facility in March, 2008, the Harford County Health Department has offered dental services to children who may never before have had a dental exam in a county that, at one time, had one of the highest rates of dental disease in the state. The clinic provides a dental home and has demonstrated remarkable success responding to their oral health care needs of more than 5,000 of the 15,000 children, aged 1 – 20, and pregnant women enrolled in Maryland’s Medical Assistance Program. Start-up funding for the dental clinic was made possible through the generosity of the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission, the Dresher Foundation, and state and county support However, Mrs. Kelly notes that, in addition to its productivity, the dental program also has succeeded in achieving another important goal. Apart from receiving a small annual state grant, the facility, located at 2204 Hanson
Road in the Edgewood Plaza Shopping Center in Edgewood, has generated sufficient revenue to be self-supporting and to complete an expansion project. The number of dental chairs recently was expanded from three to five in order to accommodate the growing number of children and pregnant women enrolling in Medical Assistance.
“In addition to offering cleanings, oral examinations, fluoride treatments, sealants, and fillings, the clinic will now offer some oral surgery and endodontic services (root canals) on site two days a month,” says Marcy Austin, Dental Clinic Manager. “These expanded and invaluable services will eliminate some of the need to refer patients out for specialty care so that children and pregnant women can receive a full array of general and specialty services in their dental home.” For more information about Harford County’s public health dental clinic or to schedule an appointment, please call (443) 922-7670. Additional information on childhood dental health can be obtained by visiting www.harfordcountyhealth.com or www.fha.state.md.us/oralhealth/.

Havre de Grace Maritime Museum discusses Havre de Grace's "New Home"
As of 30 March 2009, the day President Barack Obama signed Public Law No. 111-11, Havre-de-Grace is part of the only National Historic Trail east of the Appalachian Mountains. Yet even today many people along this 600-mile trail, which runs from Boston and Newport through New York, Philadelphia, Havre de Grace and Baltimore to Yorktown, are unaware of where it runs, what it commemorates, or what it is good for. This presentation, which is based on the research Dr. Selig is currently conducting for an architectural and historical resource inventory and site survey in the State of Maryland, will provide 1) some background information on the W3R-NHT, 2) point out the routes and water lanes through Maryland and the important role the state played in the campaign of 1781 and the siege and victory at Yorktown, and 3) suggest possibilities and opportunities how communities such as Havre-de-Grace can get involved in, and benefit from, a National Historic Trail such as the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route. The lecture will consist of five parts:(1) background information on efforts that resulted in the W3R-NHT designation(2) an outline of the plan for the resource survey, including where and what the primary resources are for Maryland, the organizations with which I plan to work, and the final products that the funding partners in this project will receive(3) an outline of the routes and water lanes through Maryland and the important role the state played in the campaign of 1781, the siege and victory at Yorktown, and the return marches of 1781 and 1782(4) a call to the public and other historians in the State for other information they may be aware of
(5) public discussion, questions and answers.

Making Sense of the Civil War @ HCC
Harford Community College Library and the Hays-Heighe House will host a free, five-part reading and discussion series called “Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War” beginning March 1.
The National Endowment for the Humanities and American Library Association have provided grants to 65 public libraries nationwide to hold the series in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and emancipation. Harford Community College is partnering with Harford County Public Library, the Historical Society of Harford County and the Spirits of Tudor Hall to offer the book discussion series and related programming.
The discussion series is based on three books: “March” by Geraldine Brooks; “Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam” by James McPherson; and “America’s War: Talking About the Civil War and Emancipation on Their 150th Anniversaries,” edited by Edward L. Ayers. James Karmel, Ph.D., associate professor of history at Harford Community College, will lead the discussion at each session.
The book discussions will be held on Thursdays throughout the spring semester: March 1, March 15, March 29, April 19 and May 3. Each discussion will be held twice—first at 12:30 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m.—to make participation convenient. The discussions will be held at the Hays-Heighe House.
In addition, a tour of Tudor Hall will be available for participants in the discussion series on Thursday, April 12, at 12:30 p.m.
“We are delighted to have been chosen to host this unique series that will allow the College community and the local community a chance to discuss the legacy of the Civil War with the help of a well-qualified scholar,” said Carol Allen, director of the library at Harford Community College.
Participation in the reading and discussion series is free of charge, but advance registration is required to obtain copies of each book and other program materials. To register, contact Ann Persson, Hays-Heighe House coordinator, at 443-412-2495 or by email apersson@harford.edu.
In addition to the book discussion series, three additional lectures are planned. They are open to the public and free of charge:
· “In a Stranger Place: Louisa May Alcott and Other Concordians Respond to the Civil War” will be given by Colleen Webster, professor of English at Harford Community College, on Tuesday, March 6, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the HCC Student Center, Room 243.
· “Marching Through Maryland: Lee’s Campaign of 1862” will be given by Thomas Clemens, Ph.D., professor of history at Hagerstown Community College, on Thursday, March 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bel Air Branch of the Harford County Public Library. This lecture is sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council.
· “Harford County and the Fugitive Slave” will be given by Jim Chrismer, a prominent researcher on the Civil War and retired history teacher at The John Carroll School, on Thursday, April 26. Christine Tolbert, co-author of “A Journey Through Berkley, Maryland: A Tapestry of Black and White Lives Woven Together Over 200 Years at a Rural Crossroads,” and Stephen Whitman, Ph.D., the author of two books on slavery, will comment on Mr. Chrismer’s presentation. The lecture and discussion will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the HCC Student Center, Room 243, and again from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in HCC’s Edgewood Hall, Room 132.
For more information, contact Ann Persson at 443-412-2495 or email apersson@harford.edu or Carol Allen at 443-412-2144 or email caallen@harford.edu.

SmartDrive contest 2/1-3/31/12 to promote safe teen driving with Prom Promise
SmartDrive, a free, online defensive driving program, is raising awareness this prom and graduation season with its Prom Promise promotion which will reward schools and students with Prom or After Prom money for the schools with the greatest number of signatures. Public service announcements recorded by SmartDrive students will be heard promoting the Prom Promise.
Students all over Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia are challenged to sign the Prom Promise to remain drug and alcohol free, to drive safely without distractions, to wear their seatbelts and to never put themselves, their passengers or their property in harm’s way. Students can electronically sign the promise at the SmartDrive website at www.smartdriveusa.org.
Initiated by students of SmartDrive Board member, Delaware Driver Safety Education Association President and Pencader Charter High School driver education teacher, Karen Dickens, the Prom Promise is a tool to keep students safe.
“This is a great way to remind not just our students, but also parents and the community of the critical importance of safe driving behavior at what is not only the most exciting time of the school year, but also what can be the deadliest for our students,” said Dickens. “By challenging students in five states to sign the promise it is our hope to get everyone ‘on board’ to driving smart.”
The contest will run from February 1, 2012 through March 31, 2012 and at its conclusion, nine schools in the three regions will be awarded with a cash prize for their Prom or After Prom. The three regions are Delaware, Maryland/Virginia and New Jersey/Pennsylvania. The prizes for each region are $500, $250 and $100 in cash.
SmartDrive is a 501c3 foundation registered in the state of Delaware. Its mission is simple, to reduce loss of life and property in senseless motor vehicle crashes by providing education, positive reinforcement and raising awareness among drivers via online and hands on skills training courses. SmartDrive works hand in hand with parents and schools to reach young drivers through assemblies, in school lunch recruitments, after school programs, and community events. SmartDrive offers insurance discounts, scholarships, incentives and Prom or After Prom money to reward students and schools for positive choices and outstanding performance. Founded by Delmarva Broadcasting Company, SmartDrive, is in its seventh year of operation and has served over 25,000 students in 113 high schools all over Delaware,

The Humane Society of Harford County Bowl-a-Rama
It’s time to lace up the snazzy rented bowling shoes, buy a slice of pizza, and settle in for a fun-filled afternoon of bowling on Saturday, February 25, 2012 from 3:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Forest Hill Lanes, One Maurice Drive in Forest Hill, MD in support of the homeless and neglected animals at the Humane Society of Harford County.
You don’t have to be a candidate for the Professional Bowling Association to join in and raise money for the animals. Forest Hill Lanes has lane bumpers for the kids and computerized score keeping, so anyone can participate. The key to success is collecting donations prior to the event which can be accomplished two ways: either print a paper form to collect donations or create a personalized event page at www.harfordshelter.org and fundraise online. Most people do both! You’re passionate about animals, right? Then don’t be shy about asking friends, family, co-workers, and school buddies to support the animals at the shelter. All donations are tax-deductible and should be brought to the registration desk on the day of the Bowl-a-Rama.
Registration for the Bowl-a-Rama will begin at 3 p.m. and participants will bowl as many games as they can fit in between 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. Pre-registration is $15 per person and registration at the door is $20. Registration fees will help to pay for lane rentals and bowling shoes. To pre-register, visit www.harfordshelter.org by February 20 and follow the links to register and pay the $15 per person pre-registration fee with a credit card – or call 410-836-1090, x101 to pay over the phone. Each lane will consist of up to five bowlers, so if you have fewer players, you may be paired with other bowlers.
For every $50 you raise in donations, you will receive two raffle tickets for a chance to win cool prizes. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase at the Bowl-a-Rama. Tickets are $3 each, two for $5, or an arm’s length for $10. Prizes will also be awarded for the top three individuals or groups who raise the most money.
If your group is interested in sponsoring the Bowl-a-Rama, there are three different sponsorship levels that provide recognition in flyers, advertisements, and on the Internet. Visit www.harfordshelter.org for details.
The Humane Society of Harford County Joins Forces with Pets for Patriots
Fallston, MD (January 24, 2012) – The Humane Society of Harford County Inc. (HSHC) and Pets for Patriots, Inc. have joined forces to give military veterans, service members and their families the gift of a pet’s unconditional love, while providing dogs and cats a second chance at life. Through this partnership, Pets for Patriots will connect our area’s loyal service men and women to HSHC, and HSHC will introduce them to eligible homeless dogs and cats that are looking for permanent homes.
Individuals are eligible from any United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers – active, reserve, National Guard, retired or veteran. Eligible adoptions must meet one of the following criteria: dogs or cats two years and older, dogs 40-pounds or larger regardless of age, and special needs dogs and cats. The Humane Society of Harford County will help any veteran in the Pets for Patriots program find a needs- and lifestyle-appropriate pet. Joining Pets for Patriots is free to veterans and service members, and HSHC will provide a 20% adoption discount. In addition, Jarrettsville Veterinary Center is currently offering a 10% discount on veterinary services for approved Pets for Patriots members. Additional veterinarians are added to the program as they are approved.
“Our goal is to help our adoption partners re-home harder-to-place pets that still have years of love and life to give,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots. "Companion pets are known to provide real physical and emotional benefits to their guardians, including those suffering from post-combat stress, depression, isolation or physical disability. We’re delighted to work with The Humane Society of Harford County to give these at-risk pets a second chance at life and, in so doing, to enhance the lives of veterans living in the community."
HSHC quickly saw the potential to find adult dogs and cats permanent homes with service members. “We are able to place about 1,500 pets each year,” says Mary Leavens, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Harford County. “Through our partnership with Pets for Patriots, we hope to provide forever homes to even more loving animals with the many military personnel and veterans in our area.”
Service men and women interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service. Approval typically takes one or two business days, after which the military member can visit HSHC for assistance in choosing a new pet friend.
