It is difficult to adequately express what A.I. DuPont has meant to our family. My son Dylan was born in May, 1995 after a very problematic pregnancy and was diagnosed with severe Spastic Cerebral Palsy. We were told that he would never be able to walk or talk; would never know who we [his family] were and to take him home and make him comfortable, or better yet, put him in a long term care facility. For years, we stumbled around from doctor to doctor and hospital to hospital, not quite sure of the best place to take him and tried everywhere in Maryland at least once. In the summer of 2002, we found out quite by accident that Dylan had two (2) dislocated hips and would probably require surgery as soon as possible. I called his doctor at the time to make an appointment for a surgical consult and was told by his office that it would take 2-4 months to even get an appointment, much less have the surgery performed, even though the hip dislocation was extremely painful for Dylan.

I had heard of A.I. DuPont through Dylan’s teachers at school so I contacted their orthopedic department, explained the situation and had an appointment with Dr. Dabney the next day. Within 30 days, Dylan had his first surgery and was recuperating at home. I was so impressed with the Dr. Dabney, the hospital and the way we were treated during this surgery, over the next year, we transferred all of Dylan’s care to A.I. duPont.

As Dylan got older, his medical needs and care became more extensive. He had several orthopedic surgeries, and several general surgeries, both planned and emergent. His surgeons, Dr. Dabney and Dr. Katz, as well as his other doctors (Drs. Bachrach and Falchek to name a few), became not only trusted medical professionals, but a part of our family. From 2005 to 2009, Dylan spent at least 4-10 weeks in the hospital each year for various reasons. (You know you are there a lot when you can tell the nurses had gotten a hair cut.) During that time, we could not have asked for any better care or treatment from his doctors and the staff, professional and otherwise, for our son. I would be stopped in the hallway with “How’s Dylan doing?” on more than one occasion from staff I didn’t even remember meeting. We had gone from not knowing what to expect of his medical issues to being well informed on what was coming down the road.

In September, 2009, Dylan passed away unexpectedly at the age of 14. I received phone calls, letters and emails with expressions of sympathy from his doctor’s. These doctors treat hundreds, if not thousands, of patients, and they took time to tell us they were sorry. I truly believe that if it were not for A.I. duPont, Dylan’s quality of life would have been severely diminished and that they lengthened the time we were able to have him with us here on Earth. While Dylan could never walk or talk, his smile lightened up a room. With the help of those at A.I. DuPont, I was able to see that wonderful smile for 14 years, six years longer than we were told to expect by the doctors when he was born. I can’t think of an adequate way to thank those at A.I. DuPont so I’ll just say simply…thank you.
